Distribution: Occurring east of the Cascades crest in Washington; southern British Columbia to California, east to the Rocky Mountains, northern Great Plains, and Texas.

Habitat: Dry, often rocky places, from the foothills and plains to moderate elevations in the mountains.

Nearly glabrous perennial with several stems rising from a taproot and branching, short, woody base, 2-7 dm. tall, with milky juice.

Leaves linear or filiform, entire, up to 3 cm. long and 3 mm. wide, the upper reduced and scale-like.

Heads terminating the branches, 5-flowered; involucre cylindric, 7-11 mm. high, with mostly 5 principle bracts; corollas all ligulate, white to pink; pappus white, the bristles plumose to the base.

Achenes 4-6 mm. long, longitudinally ribbed and grooved but otherwise smooth.
